Activists' demands threaten to stall Green Chemistry Initiative

California took the bold step two years ago of launching the Green Chemistry Initiative - an effort to change our approach to toxic and dangerous substances by encouraging the use of safer materials in the design and manufacture of consumer products.
Like all bold steps, it required a new way of thinking: Environmentalists, businesses and government would work together to find ways to balance the needs of our environment with the needs of consumers and our state's economy.
Today, it's clear that business and government were serious about that promise. Two years of careful work have resulted in draft regulations by the Department of Toxic Substance Control that, while not perfect, represent an honest effort at a workable system to protect consumers, jobs and our environment.
What is less clear is whether environmental interests lobbying the department and the governor's administration will be able to embrace the promised new way of thinking, or whether they will cling to an all-or-nothing mentality that may very well doom the Green Chemistry Initiative before it gets off the ground.
